Best 5 Seater Cars in India Under 8 Lakhs

The seven-seat utility vehicles/cars are known for their spacious cabins that are enough to accommodate an average Indian family and their extended family. While such vehicles were around much before the augment of SUV space in India, the contemporary models have intensified the competition. It is no more about the space inside the cabin, but styling, comfort and convenience have further contributed to the popularity of large seven-seat family vehicles. In 2020, we had witnessed the introduction of several new cars including big 7-seater SUVs and MPVs like MG Gloster, etc. For those planning to buy a new car, here's a complete list of the upcoming 7 seater cars in India in the next two years.

Upcoming New 7 Seater SUVs In 2021, 2022

1. Hyundai Alcazar

Hyundai Alcazar SUV

The production-ready Hyundai Alcazar 7-seater SUV recently made its world debut in India. Based on the 5-seater Creta, the new three-row SUV is likely to hit showrooms in coming months. Its official launch date is yet to be announced by the carmaker. The Alcazar measures 30mm longer than its 5-seater sibling and has a 20mm longer wheelbase. The SUV will be offered in 6 and 7-seats options. While the 6-seater model will have captain seats for second row, the 7-seater Creta will get bench type second and third row seats. The SUV will look different from the Creta featuring a flat roof, revised rear profile, new roof rails, slimmer C-pillar and new chrome-studded front grille. Similar to its younger sibling, the 7-seater Hyundai Alcazar will be offered with both petrol (159bhp 2.0L) and diesel (1.5L) engine options. Transmissions on offer will include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.

2. Mahindra XUV700

2021 Mahindra XUV500 Turbo Petrol

The home-grown carmaker recently announced the official name of its upcoming W601 SUV – Mahindra XUV700. The company has confirmed that the model will see a release in Q2 fiscal year 2022. The XUV700 will be the successor of the current-generation XUV500 with comprehensive design changes, feature upgrades and a more powerful engine setup. The new XUV500 will come with a new 2.0L diesel motor boosted with SCR and DPF, thus making it BS6-compliant. The new oil burner will deliver power worth 180bhp. The SUV will also get the new 2.0L mStallion turbocharged petrol engine producing 190bhp and 380Nm of torque. Transmission options will include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic unit.

3. Tata Hexa Safari 4X4

The homegrown automaker, Tata Motors had previewed the BSVI Hexa Safari SUV at the 2020 Auto Expo. The new Safari Edition will come with bolder exterior look and white interiors with special Safari badging. The model showcased at the Auto Expo was finished in a bespoke paint. For power, the SUV uses a BS6-compliant 2.2-litre, 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine that's good enough for 156PS and a peak torque of 400Nm. Similar to the discontinued model, the BS6 Hexa will be offered with 3 transmission options – 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic. The BS6 Hexa Safari edition will come with a 4×4 drivetrain system.

4. New Mahindra Scorpio

Mahindra has been extensively testing the next-gen Scorpio that's expected to hit roads in the second half of 2021 or early 2022. The SUV's all-new model will come with improved design, better-equipped and premium interior and new powertrain options. The next-gen Mahindra Scorpio will be made available with the new 2.0L turbocharged petrol and the BS6-compliant 2.0L diesel engine options. While the updated oil burner will be around 20bhp more powerful than the existing motor, the new petrol engine will produce 190bhp of power and 380Nm of torque. The all-new Scorpio will be based on the modified version of the existing platform that will also be used in the new Thar.

5. New-Gen Kia Sorento

The South Korean automaker, Kia Motors is considering the new Sorento SUV for the Indian market. One must note there is no official word on its India arrival and launch timeline. The SUV is based on the new-generation N3 platform that will also underpins the India-bound next-gen Kia Carnival. The new Kia Sorento measures above 4.8 meters in length, thus making it a direct rival of the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. The new SUV could be imported to India via CKD route. The engine setup of the Soento is likely to including a 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel motor pushing out power worth 200bhp and 440Nm of torque.

6. Jeep H6 SUV

The American SUV maker, Jeep has planned a range of SUVs for the Indian market including a 7-seater D-segment SUV. The new Jeep 7-seater SUV will be based on the heavily localised Jeep Compass's platform. It will rival against the likes of Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, Honda CR-V and others in its category. The SUV is expected to be powered by a 1.3L turbo MultiAir 16V diesel engine that produces 180bhp of power and torque between 225Nm – 245Nm. The diesel version will be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine producing 170bhp of power and 350Nm of torque. Both manual and automatic gearbox options will be on offer.

7. Mahindra XUV400

Mahindra & Mahindra recently filed a trademark application for the name 'Mahindra XUV400' that's likely to be used for its Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos rival. Expected to measure around 4.3 meters in length, the upcoming mid-size SUV will sit between the XUV300 and the upcoming XUV700. The model is likely to be based on the brand's X100 platform that also underpins the XUV300 subcompact SUV. At the engine front, the new Mahindra SUV is reported to come with a 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine that makes a top power of 163bhp and 280Nm of torque. The diesel version might be offered with a 1.2L turbo engine that's tuned offering power 120bhp with 300Nm. Both manual and automatic options will be on offer.

8. Maruti 7-Seater SUV

The Indo-Japanese carmaker is planning to expand its SUV portfolio in coming years. The company is working on a range of new models including a Baleno-based crossover, 5-door Jimny, a mid-size SUV (that will be developed with Toyota) and a 7-seater SUV. As of now, there is no official word on the new Maruti 7-seater SUV. Though, it's rumoured to be based on the global Vitara's platform. It will be produced at Toyota's Bidadi facility. Once launched, the Maruti three-row SUV will lock horns against the MG Hector Plus and the upcoming Mahindra XUV700 and Hyundai Alcazar.

Upcoming New 7 Seater MPVs In 2021, 2022

9. MG G10 MPV

MG G10 MPV India

MG Motors had showcased the G10 9-seater MPV at the 2020 Auto Expo. If media reports are to be believed, the MG G10 MPV will be launched in our market in the second half of 2021. The new MG MPV will be positioned against the new Kia Carnival MPV that costs between Rs 24.95 lakh – Rs 33.95 lakh (ex-showroom). The MPV measures 5,168mm in length, 1,980mm in width and 1,928mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 3210mm. Compared to its rival (Carnival), the G10 is 50mm longer and 173mm taller. Under the hood, the MG G10 is likely to house a 2.0L twin-turbo diesel engine that also powers the MG Gloster SUV. Sourced from Fiat, the oil burner pushes out a peak power of 218bhp and a maximum torque of 480Nm.

10. New Maruti-Toyota MPV

Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are jointly working on an all-new C-Segment MPV which will be positioned between the Ertiga and the Innova. The new MPV will directly rival the Mahindra Marazzo. It is likely to be based on Toyota's low-cost DNGA (Daihatsu New Global Architecture) platform that has already been used in the Toyota Raize and the Daihatsu Rocky. The same architecture will also underpin the upcoming mid-sized SUV that will take head-to-head against the Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos. The new MPV is likely to derive its power from a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired and come with both manual and automatic gearboxes.

11. Kia KY MPV

Kia Motors has planned a new compact MPV for the Indian market to challenge the dominance of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. It will also take on the upcoming Hyundai compact MPV. The new Kia MPV will share its platform with the Seltos SUV, but sit on a longer wheelbase. It is likely to come with both 6 and 7-seats configurations. While the former will have captain seats for the second row, the latter one will get bench type seat.  The upcoming Kia KY MPV might also borrow its engine setup from the Seltos that includes 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol, 1.5L turbocharged diesel motors. The gasoline motor makes 113bhp with 144Nm and the oil burner is good enough for 113bhp and 250Nm. Both manual and automatic gearboxes are likely to be offered.

12. Hyundai Compact MPV

Hyundai Motor Company is getting ready to foray into the compact MPV space to challenge the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Mahindra Marazzo. There is no official word on its India launch timeline yet. Similar to the upcoming Kia KY, the new Hyundai MPV might be made available with 6 and 7-seats layouts. It will be designed and developed on the new Creta's platform that will also underpin the upcoming new Kia MPV. Reports suggest that the new Hyundai compact MPV might be named 'Hyundai Staria'. It could be offered with 1.5L petrol and 1.5L diesel engines producing 113bhp with 145Nm and 113bhp with 250Nm respectively. Most of its features are likely to be shared with the Creta SUV.

13. Tata 7-Seater MPV

Tata Motors aims to foray into the 7-seater compact MPV segment to challenge the dominance of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. The model is likely to underpin the Alfa (Agile Light Flexible Advanced Architecture) platform that's also used in the Altroz premium hatchback. It will feature Tata's new Impact 2.0 design language and is likely to share some of its design bits with the Altroz. It would be quite early to comment on its engine options. Though, we expect it to come with the Nexon's 1.2L turbo petrol and 1.5L diesel powertrains. Both manual and automatic gearboxes are likely to be offered.
